Abstract
Purpose: This study evaluated the dietary behavior and nutritional status of children at community child center in Busan Area using Nutrition Quotient (NQ).

Methods: Our survey was administered to 235 children at 25 child centers from June 2 to August 20, 2017.

Results: The mean score of the children¡¯s NQ was poor, reaching 61.3 points. The factor scores for balance, diversity, moderation, regularity, and practice were 52.5, 69.1, 69.3, 59.5, and 62.1 points, respectively. Compared with the NQ cut-off points of the factors, mean scores of balance, diversity, regularity, and practice were below the cut-off points, whereas moderation was only above the cut-off point. The girls showed significantly higher scores than boys in terms of NQ scores (p<0.01) and diversity scores (p<0.05). The NQ scores and balance scores were significantly different according to the number of family members (p<0.05) and frequency of family meals (p<0.01). For the percentage distribution of NQ grades, the highest grade was 7.2%, high grade was 8.9% medium grade was 48.5%, low grade was 21.7%, the lowest grade was 13.6%, respectively. The NQ grade was positively associated with interest in nutrition education (p<0.01) and with practice of nutrition education (p<0.001), but was not related to nutrition education experience.

Conclusion: NQ scores and NQ grades of children at community child centers were lower than national averages and distribution. Therefore, Customized nutrition education should consider the home and dietary environment for children at community child centers. It is necessary to develop a systematic nutrition education strategy in which children can increase their attention and interest in nutrition education.
